Marie McNair, has formally recognised Canon William McGinley in the Scottish Parliament for his 63 years of service to the Catholic Church.

An MSP has honoured a priest for his 63 years of service to the Catholic Church.

Marie McNair, the SNP MSP for Clydebank and Milngavie, recognised Canon William McGinley in the Scottish Parliament.

The MSP praised Canon McGinley in a parliamentary motion for his contributions to the Catholic community in Clydebank and beyond.

On Friday, August 1, Canon McGinley joined Ms McNair, the Archbishop of Glasgow, and parishioners for a mass at St Patrick's Church.

This was followed by a reception in Napier Hall where Canon McGinley was presented with the framed parliamentary motion.

Father Martin, who will now oversee St Patrick’s and St Stephen’s, was also present.

Canon McGinley was ordained on June 29, 1962, at St Andrew’s Cathedral and started his journey as an assistant priest at St Bernard’s that same year.

His dedication led him to serve in various churches across the diocese before becoming a parish priest at St Stephen’s Sighthill in 1992.

He then moved on to St Conval’s before settling at St Patrick’s in Old Kilpatrick in 2013, where he served until his retirement this year on July 4.

Ms McNair said: "I am delighted to be able to formally recognise Canon McGinley in parliament and celebrate his hard work over the past 63 years.

"Canon McGinley has given so much to the Catholic community of Clydebank and further afield, so it was a pleasure to be able to celebrate with him and the community on Friday, and wish him all the best for his well-deserved retirement."
