'I have pushed to see action taken to support asbestos victims'

I was sad to find out recently that David Colraine, founding member of Clydebank Asbestos Group (CAG), had passed away.

David and his friends established CAG in 1992 and he has been a key part of the group’s campaign in the fight for truth and justice for asbestos victims and their families.

This is an issue very close to my heart, and for the past five years in the Scottish Parliament I have pushed to see action taken to support asbestos victims, which includes questioning the Scottish Government, annual Action Mesothelioma Day debates, and meeting with the First Minister.

Before Parliament dissolves for the May election, I will meet with the Minister for Victims and Community Safety regarding the three-year time bar which is denying many asbestos victims the support they deserve.

I am so grateful to David, the early founders of CAG, and those who currently work there, for their continued efforts to support those in need.

David will be remembered for his immense contribution, and his legacy will live on through the group’s work.

In the Scottish Parliament, I was pleased to see the SNP Scottish Government set out the budget for 2026/27, which firmly prioritises the needs of people in Clydebank.

I know from regular discussions with constituents that the cost-of-living pressures is a real worry.

So, I am glad that the Scottish Government budget includes a range of measures, on top of those already provided, to help ease the pressure.

This includes the delivery of a new universal breakfast club offer for primary school-aged children and free children’s sporting activities, including lessons on how to swim for every primary school child in the country.

Furthermore, we will increase the Scottish Child Payment to £28.20 per week and see the introduction of a payment of £40 per week for eligible babies from 2027-28.

We are also listening and taking action to support our NHS with around £22.5 billion being allocated to health and social care with a continued focus on reducing long waits, including vital funding for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

This budget focuses clearly on the people of Scotland’s priorities.

It is a budget for Scotland, and I am proud to support it.

With the short time we have left before the election on May 7, I will continue to use my platform in the Scottish Parliament to fight for what matters for Clydebank, Milngavie and Bearsden North.

I am always here to listen and help you with your concerns, so please do not hesitate to contact me if you need my assistance.
