Justice for victims of mesothelioma
Marie McNair MSP

It’s great to be back in Parliament and to have the Programme for Government announced for this new term.
In the next year, the SNP Scottish Government will deliver transformational change for Scotland, built upon a stronger economy and by putting more money in people's pockets.
The Programme for Government this year was also a particularly important one for the constituency.
That is because it included legislation for asbestos victims, something that I have campaigned on for many years.
The Damages (Scotland) Bill will deliver the December 2024 Scottish
Law Commission report on Damages for Personal Injury.
This means people diagnosed with mesothelioma will have fairer access to compensation as the law will clarify when the three-year time limit for raising a claim begins, addressing a longstanding issue where the clock can run out before a person knows they have the disease.
For many years I have worked closely with Clydebank Asbestos Group and different lawyers to push for action, so this is welcome news.
There is of course still much to do, and I will be meeting soon with stakeholders to discuss the legislation in more detail.
Over the last couple of weeks, it has been lovely catching up with many local groups.
This included supporting Clan McKie at the finish line of their Walk of Hope in Mugdock Park, where they raised over £3,400 for brain tumour research.
This is an amazing achievement, and I thank Clan McKie for everything they do in Graham's memory.
I also popped into Wilkie's Eyecare in Bearsden to meet Willis Wilkie to discuss the work being done on community eye care and what steps could be taken in the future to make improvements.
If you require any assistance, I am here to help and have regular surgeries in Milngavie and Bearsden.
