Clydebank and Milngavie MSP Marie McNair has welcomed an increase to the Scottish Child Payment.

Families with a child under one are now eligible for an increased payment of £40 to help with the cost of living – part of a wider package of support only available in Scotland.

Announced in the recent Scottish budget, the support is designed to help with the cost of raising young children and to reduce child poverty.

The Scottish Child Payment is one element of a suite of measures available to families, which also includes the Baby Box, Best Start Grants and 1140 hours of free childcare for eligible two-year-olds and all three and four-year-olds.

Ms McNair has welcomed the announcement.

She said: “This SNP Government is taking action to ensure Scotland is the best part of the UK to start a family.

“The increase to the Scottish Child Payment and schemes like the Baby Box will make a significant difference to new parents in Clydebank and Milngavie, and across Scotland.

“It’s policies like these that mean that Scotland is the only part of the UK where child poverty is decreasing, rather than increasing.”
