CLYDEBANK AND MILNGAVIE MSP CALLS OUT UK LABOUR GOVERNMENT FOR BETRAYING WASPI WOMEN

Marie McNair MSP has hit out at the recent announcement from the UK Labour Government that they will not pay WASPI women any compensation, despite the Ombudsman report recommending compensation of between £1,000 and £2,950.

The Women Against State Pension Injustice (WASPI) campaign seeks fair and fast compensation for the 1950’s women affected by the changes to the State Pension Age. They are not against equalisation but do not accept the unfair way changes were implemented, often with inadequate or no notice at all.

Around 3.9million women were affected by this change, with an estimated 6,300 women in West Dunbartonshire and 4,700 women in East Dunbartonshire.

In March, the local MSP submitted a motion to Parliament to re-highlight the plight of the women affected by the changes to state pension laws, following a meeting the MSP had with West Dunbartonshire WASPI.

The local MSP commented:

“I am absolutely appalled by this decision by the Labour Government. Yet again they have betrayed pensioners.

“Despite the Ombudsman being clear that compensation was required, the Labour Government have ignored this and betrayed WASPI women – women who have worked tirelessly their whole lives and who have been left struggling to make ends meet.

“I would expect to see West Dunbartonshire’s Labour MP Douglas McAllister condemn this decision, given he has previously said he supports WASPI women.

“WASPI women deserve much better. My colleagues and I in the SNP will continue to stand with them and push for compensation.”
