SNP Scottish Government will scrap the UK Government’s abhorrent two-child cap

Marie McNair MSP has praised the Scottish Government in their plans to mitigate the UK Government’s two-child cap come 2026.

This comes in light of the recent announcement from the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government that the Scottish Government will mitigate the UK Government’s two-child cap in 2026, lifting over 15,000 children out of poverty.

The two-child cap, introduced by the Tory party in 2017, is a social security policy that restricts parents from claiming child tax credits or Universal Credit for more than two children.

The MSP states that this policy has caused ‘misery’ for children and families across Scotland.

Many expected the incoming Labour Government to scrap the cap, however, this has not happened.

Research suggests the policy has plunged a rising number of children into poverty, harming their childhood and long-term opportunities.

Marie commented: “I am absolutely delighted that the SNP Scottish Government will scrap the UK Government’s abhorrent two-child cap, alongside reinstating the universal Winter Heating Payment which the Labour Government cruelly scrapped.

“This will be essential in our fight to tackle child poverty and will be a massive relief for so many of my constituents and those across Scotland.

“Yet again, the Scottish Government has to mitigate the cruel policies imposed upon us from the UK Government. Whether it is Tory or Labour Government policies, they are no different.

“Only the SNP will continue to stand up for Scotland and those most in need.”
